Best of Beauty 2017
Hello everybody! I hope you had a happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year. As we say goodbye to 2017 and welcome 2018, I thought I would put together a list of all of my favorite products from the year into a Best of Beauty 2017.
So without further ado, these are the products I was obsessed with during 2017:
Best of Beauty 2017
Best of Hair
#Obsessed. I received this shampoo and conditioner as a sample to test out months ago, and I’ve never gotten so hooked on a shampoo and conditioner. If I’m being honest, it’s a pretty penny, but it’s not too far off from other salon quality shampoos and conditioners. My hair hasn’t felt this healthy in a long time. This shampoo and conditioner duo is packed with vitamins and biotin to strengthen and thicken hair, and it doesn’t have sulfates or parabens. If you struggle to maintain healthy hair, or you’re suffering from hair loss, I would highly recommend this. Check it out here.
If you’ve been a reader of mine since the beginning, you know that I’m obsessed with this stuff. (You can check out my love sonnet to it here) This stuff is so lightweight, so there isn’t any leftover or greasy residue. It uses a blend of rosehip, argan, and coconut oils, and it does not have sulfates, parabens, phthalates, silicones, DEA, or synthetic dyes. It’s also cruelty-free, vegan, and gluten-free. I use it from the middle of my hair to the ends after every shower, and since I just purchased another bottle last week, I can definitely say it’s a stand out 2017 product for me. Check it out here.
Y’all. This stuff is the best to remove any buildup from dry shampoo/glitter/regrets from nights past/whatever. The best way I’ve found to use this is to take a small dollop on your finger, put it into your palm and run a little water into your palm to thicken the consistency, then focus on only rubbing it into the roots of your hair. I use it about once a week, so the tub lasts forever. Check it out here.
I feel like I got this in a Sephora Play! box or maybe an Ipsy bag, but it was a LONG time ago… and somehow I have over 75% of the sample bottle left! This is so incredible. Trust me, you only need like 2 drops if you have medium length hair (otherwise you might look a bit greasy). This oil has done wonders for my hair to keep it looking healthy and preventing split ends. Check it out here.
Argan oil does wonders for the skin and hair. I try to do a hair mask once every week or two. I have quite a few favorites, but this one is definitely the one that gave me the most consistent results. Check it out here.
As much as I hate to admit it, I’m beginning to notice some gray hairs peaking through. I’m not a huge fan of the idea of dying my roots every time I turn around, so this little miracle is amazing! If you’re starting to get some gray hair, and you need something to extend the life of your colorings (or if you don’t want to color your hair at all), this is perfect for you. I’ve noticed my roots can sometimes look slightly duller in color than the rest of my hair, so a quick spritz of this root touchup concealer and I’m off! They also have a magnetic powder that I like to keep in my purse just in case as well. Check it out here.
Best of Skincare
I used to order my products from The Ordinary on Beautylish, but now that Sephora carries them, I’ve been switching on and off. The Ordinary has some of the best skincare products because they break down their skincare by ingredient rather than bunching everything together and naming it “Moisturizer for Oily Skin” even though it may or may not help everyone in that category. They’re also super affordable. My husband and I use this to prevent and combat any lines/wrinkles from setting into our faces. It’s amazing. Check it out here.
I know it’s super confusing to purchase items with the ingredient name instead of just “oily/dry/acne-prone skin moisturizer” etc, but trust me, The Ordinary is worth it. Joseph and I both use this now. He has freakishly dry skin, and I have combination/sensitive. For those of you with dry skin, you don’t need to be told to hydrate, but a lot of oily and combination girls don’t realize that you need to add good oils to your skincare routine so your skin isn’t overproducing them. This stuff keeps my skin soft and my skin has been less oily all year. Check it out here.
2017 was definitely the year of essential oils for me. I use them for almost everything at this point… I kinda feel like the dad in My Big Fat Greek Wedding who thinks Windex is the solution to everything. Tea Tree, Lavender and Frankincense I use in my skincare routine, and I’ve seen a massive difference. (If you have breakouts, tea tree and lavender. Redness – lavender. Anti-aging and scarring – frankincense) Check out all of artnaturals essential oils here.
The skin under your eyes is so sensitive, which means you can’t use a regular facial moisturizer and call it quits. I went back and forth on this one and the Lancome Vissionnaire Eye Cream for which was my favorite. If you only have some under eye dehydration and preliminary lines, then the Kiehl’s one may work better as a preventative for you. I personally don’t have dark circles, so I can’t speak on that subject for these products, but this is so amazing for preventative measures. Check it out here.
I wrote about these masks in my very first post on my blog when I reviewed Korean skincare (check out the post here), and I’m still in love with these sheet masks by Leaders. There are a ton of sheets masks I’ve liked, but these are on my love list. They have an entire range, but my personal favorites are the AC Clear and the Aloe Soothing. Check it out here.
YAS HON-EY. Where were these when I was in middle school? These little miracle workers are the best. Personally, I recommend peeling one off right after you’ve washed your face before going to sleep, whack it on there, and then wake up with absolutely nothing on your face in time for work/school/coffee with the hottie down the street. Seriously, these rock. Check it out here.
L’Occitane is no joke. Joseph and I are obsessed with their hand and foot creams. What I absolutely love about their products is that not only does a little go a long way, but I can apply this before I go to bed and wake up the next morning with my skin still completely hydrated. This is a must-have product for those with chronically dry skin (like my husband), but it’s a huge plus regardless of how often you need to moisturize. Pro tip: if you ever want to do a foot mask, use this and either some socks or plastic wrap and leave it for 20 minutes for baby’s butt feet. Check it out here.
The majority of my favorite skincare products this year are infused with essential oils. Green Goo is an indie brand I’m loving at the moment. This is their healing bar, which they infuse with various essential oils (my favorite is lavender). It leaves your skin super soft, and it doesn’t include any harmful ingredients. (Seriously, it’s like we can’t trust any brands anymore!) Check it out here.
Best of Makeup
I’m ride or die for this product by Bioderma. I use it as a makeup remover and a pre-cleanser. The formula balances out the oils in your skin, and I love that you can remove your makeup in the afternoon and you don’t have to immediately worry about washing your face. (Because most makeup wipes leave that weird slippery feeling residue) Trust me though, get the one with the pump on the top. Check it out here.
What a beautiful little miracle. I decided to splurge on this for Sephora’s semi-annual sale, and it’s probably one of the best primers I’ve used. The price tag is a bit high, but if you have any events that you absolutely want your makeup to stick, this is the ship that will get you there. Don’t use a foundation brush on top of this though, only a wet sponge. Check it out here.
I kept going back and forth between this foundation and the Lock-It Foundation by Kat Von D, but I gotta be totally honest since we are doing a Best of Beauty 2017 list. They are both amazing foundations for full coverage, but I’ve been using my All Nighter one almost nonstop. As a combination/oily girl, it’s hard to find a foundation that will last the entire day, but this one holds up if I don’t use a setting spray! Craziness. The coverage is full, but the consistency is quite thin. Check it out here.
I feel like this one is a no-brainer. The Tarte Shape Tape is perfect for highlighting and buffing out with a wet Beauty Blender under the eyes or on the nose/chin/forehead. I don’t use it as a blemish concealer since it has the wand (ew, bacteria), so for that I would still recommend my trusty Mac Proconcealer with the pump. The Tarte Shape Tape is long wearing, it doesn’t crease or look cakey throughout the day. Check it out here.
Fenty Beauty’s official launch happened in 2017, and they released SO many products. I was sad that the foundation oxidized on my skin a little too much for me to justify keeping it, but this blotting powder has gone from my vanity to my purse just about every day. It perfectly sets my makeup, and its formula somehow magically takes away my mid and later-in-the-day oil when I reapply in the bathroom, restoring my makeup to the way it looked first thing in the morning. Check it out here.
Hands down, one of the best palettes I’ve ever owned. This palette can create some of the most incredible sunset inspired looks. But I love that you can also tone it down for more wearable looks. (It’s definitely a summer/fall palette) Check it out here.
We’re going to ignore the fact that the packaging is basically equivalent to the Better Than Sex mascara, but the formula and the wand on this are goals. It’s a drugstore mascara, so the price is right, and it layers amazingly. I’m not into spidery eyelashes, so if you like the romantic volume and length, this would be perfect for you! Check it out here.
For a long time I’ve been an Urban Decay setting spray gal, until I found this gem at the drugstore. My makeup lasts just as long as before, possibly even longer, which is a huge plus in my book! Check it out here.
Other 2017 Favorites
I honestly couldn’t choose which fragrance is my favorite that Elizabeth and James have come out with. You can’t go wrong with the Nirvana Black or White, but the ones I was obsessed with this year were Bourbon, and now Amethyst and French Gray. The only one that I cannot stand is Rose, which is rank on my skin. Head over to Sephora and see how these wear on your skin. You will definitely find a new favorite. Check it out here.
True story, I used to work at Claire’s while I was in high school and college. So needless to say I’m a little obsessed with keeping my nails painted. There’s definitely good polish and crappy polish, and Kathleen Lights’ line of nail polish has reached the top. The formula is 5-free, cruelty free and there’s minimal gloopy-ness as time goes on. My favorite shades are Das Esspensive (though Casino Night is also great and that one is a permanent shade), Chloe, Wishbone and St. Clair. Check it out here.
And finally, I would be doing myself a disservice by not mentioning Honey. It’s like a beautiful double tap to my cash-back option on my credit card. Every qualified online purchase I either get cash back on from the Honey plugin, or they will send me a coupon that will save me money immediately. Honey, you are the real MVP.
